PATIENT EXPERIENCE AND MANAGEMENT IN HDK SILICONE HYDROGEL SOFT CONTACT LENSES

Purpose:

Clinical benefits with high Dk (HDk) silicone soft contact lenses have been reported, and they are being fitted in increasing numbers. Managing patient expectations and compliance with wearing schedules remain important issues for continued success of these lenses. To report patient and practitioner experiences with HDk silicone hydrogel contact lens (lotrafilcon A).

Method:

Nineteen sites in the US dispensed 317 patients to wear HDk lenses. Clinical and subjective data were collected at the follow-up visits at 1-week, and 1, 6 and 12 months.

Results:

At 1 week 97%, and at 12 months 99%, of patients were satisfied or very satisfied with the HDk lenses. Satisfaction with lens handling for insertion and removal were at 88% and 82% at 1 month respectively and improved to 99% of patients by 12 months for both insertion and removal. The BC was changed for 3% of eyes and power was changed for 8% of eyes through 12 months. At dispensing, investigators recommended 6N wear for 40% and 30N wear for 46% of their patients. At 6 months, 89% of practitioners recommended 30N wear, and 85% of patients reported compliance with the recommended wearing schedule. At 12 months, patients gave greater than a 90% satisfaction score (satisfied or very satisfied) to comfort (overall, at insertion, upon awakening, and end of day), handling (insertion and removal), and vision. Comfort overall and satisfaction overall each achieved a 91% rating of very satisfied. Thirty-one complications were reported among 25 patients during the 12 months, with only 18 in 17 patients, or 5.4% of the study population, being reported as due to the lenses themselves. No reports of MK occurred.

Conclusions:

Patients are very satisfied with HDk silicone soft contact lenses, few BC and power changes were needed in first year of wear, patients followed practitioner recommendations for wearing schedule, and a low incidence of complications was exhibited throughout the first year of wear.
